The history of the Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich began on Christmas Eve 1838, when a young baker from Vorarlberg in Austria named Johannes Baur founded the first grand hotel in the city, the Hotel Baur. Exactly 185 years later, once again in the days just before Christmas, this icon is reborn as it opens its doors to international travelers and the local community after a major renovation.
To celebrate the Christmas spirit and pay homage to the hotel’s original opening date of 1838, the Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich has teamed up with the legendary opulence jeweler Harry Winston to create beautiful Christmas trees. The beautifully decorated trees are shining in Harry Winston’s signature sapphire and gold this holiday season as they grace the hotel’s iconic lobby, Restaurants and suites.
The Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich has been redesigned by the highly respected Parisian interior designer Tristan Auer, who harmoniously combines historical details with a contemporary style while ensuring that the hotel maximizes its exceptional views of the city’s monuments. Designed both aesthetically and functionally, the rooms and suites create devoted retreats of relaxation and comfort inspired by the colors of the city and the modern art scene of Zurich. Most of the 44 rooms and 36 suites have spacious terraces and private rooftops, as well as beautifully handcrafted living areas.
With four different Restaurant and bar concepts, the Mandarin Oriental Savoy, Zurich invites its customers on a culinary journey through a variety of international flavors supervised by Chef Benjamin Halat. At the heart of the hotel is the glamorous Savoy Brasserie and Bar, which offers French-inspired dishes, Swiss classics and cocktails at home all day long. devoted and refined, ORSINI is an Italian gourmet restaurant designed by the consulting chef Antonio Guida of the seta Restaurant, two Michelin stars, located in the Mandarin Oriental, in Milan. After a long day of shopping or sightseeing, guests can also relax in the elegant Mandarin Lounge or enjoy the panoramic views from the new 1838 rooftop bar starting next spring.
With its privileged location in the city center and more than 700 m2 of meeting and event space, the Mandarin Oriental Savoy is also the ideal destination for special events such as weddings, parties, celebrations and corporate events. The ten fully equipped venues include a protected historic guild hall and a beautifully preserved grand ballroom.
Since 1838, many famous names have stayed at the hotel. In 1845 alone, the famous pianist and composer Franz Liszt stayed at the Baur Hotel during Beethoven’s feast, while the nineteenth-century British literary giant Charles Dickens – the famous author of works such as the short story “A Christmas Carol” – also stayed at the hotel with his family.
